MEMBER MOMENTS: MGH Performs its Second Pig-to-Human Kidney Transplant

A Mass General Hospital surgical team has completed its second pig-to-human kidney transplant, following up the world’s first ever such surgery last year.
The surgery was conducted on January 25 on New Hampshire resident Tim Andrews, age 66, who has been on dialysis for two years, fighting end-stage kidney disease.
The Boston Business Journal quoted Andrews as saying, “There are more than 500,000 people on dialysis, and I want to inspire them to never give up hope because that’s what this transplant provides. It’s a glimmer of hope.”
The surgery was done by Dr. Leonardo Riella, medical director for kidney transplantation; lead surgeon Dr. Tatsuo Kawai, director of the Legorreta Center for Clinical Transplant Tolerance; Dr. Nahel Elias, surgical director for kidney transplantation; and Dr. Shimul Shah, division chief of transplant and clinical director of the Mass General Transplant Center.
More than 103,000 people are on the national transplant waiting list, with 89,800 of those waiting for a kidney.
