MEMBER MOMENTS: Lahey’s Moffatt-Bruce on Workforce, System’s Future
Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington, a member of Beth Israel Lahey Health, is turning 100 years old this year, and the Boston Business Journal used that touchstone date to interview the hospital’s president, Dr. Susan Moffatt-Bruce, about current challenges and her thoughts about the future of healthcare.
Moffatt-Bruce has led Lahey since December 2022. She is a cardiothoracic surgeon and a member of MHA’s Board of Trustees.
Moffatt-Bruce said workforce issues were the biggest challenges she faces at the moment, adding, “Healthcare is very much being affected by the workforce issues. Those are not only recruitment, but retention. We have to reach into the community. We have to give opportunities to learn within the communities, partner with community educational entities and also get to students earlier in their education. High school is not too early to talk about what a career in healthcare looks like.”
